Things you should know when a spill occurs:
You have six (6) hours to verbally report any spill to the Iowa DNR "Spill Reporting" hotline at (515) 281-8694
If a spill occurs on your property, "You Own It"! If you cause a spill on another property, "You Own It"! Both parties involved can be equally responsible so don't take chances.
It is called, "Cradle to Grave". If a spill occurs on your property, you are responsible for that spill even after it leaves your premises. It belongs to you until it has been transferred to a state authorized entity such as the Des Moines Water Reclamation Authority.
Outside of absolute negligence, the Iowa DNR understands that accident can happen. Their primary concern is that the spill is properly reported and the spill is cleaned up and disposition of the waste meets state environmental guidelines.
A licensed contractor qualified to clean up the spill should be contacted immediately. Green Earth Recovery can be contacted 24 hours a day / 7 days a week at: (515) 422-0030
A written report must be filed with the Iowa DNR within 30 days. The written report required by the DNR can be downloaded at the link below.
Keep all records on file permanently.
Steps that should be taken after a spill:
When you experience a spill, immediately place some form of dry absorbent on the spill to prevent it from spreading to storm drains or waterways.
We recommend always having a spill containment kit or dry absorbent available but even peat moss or kitty litter can work in a pinch. When seeking sorbent materials, look for "absorbent" products instead of "adsorbent" products.
Call Green Earth Recovery & Cleanup, Inc. at (515) 422-0030 immediately.
Call the DNR at (515) 281-8694 to report the spill.
If you prefer, Green earth Recovery & Cleanup will contact the DNR however this is only reliable if you have spoken to one of our representatives. NEVER assume the DNR has been notified unless you have called them yourself or you have personally spoken with our representative.
If the cleanup is outside of Green Earth Recovery's capabilites, we will refer you to the appropriate company who can help you.
Green Earth Recovery will typically respond within 1 - 1 1/2 hours to clean the site using our unique system to recapture the wastewater and contain it for proper and legal disposal.
Once Green Earth Recovery has completed the job, disposed of the waste, we will file out and file the "30 Day Written Report Form" with the Iowa DNR on your behalf. We do not charge for this service. Copies will be provided to you, the DNR, any other parties involved and we will keep a copy in our records as well.
